Creative with Clay

3rd July 2026

Students from Years 9 and 10 recently took part in two fantastic Ceramics workshops led by a visiting artist from Watts Gallery, giving them the opportunity to develop their clay modelling skills and explore new creative techniques.

Year 10 GCSE Art students focused on portrait sculpture, creating impressive clay heads inspired by their chosen sitters. The workshop challenged students to carefully observe facial features, proportions and expressions, transforming their observations into three-dimensional artworks. The resulting sculptures demonstrated both creativity and a growing confidence in working with clay.

Meanwhile, Year 9 students who will be starting GCSE Art next year enjoyed designing and crafting decorative clay bowls. The activity introduced them to key ceramic techniques and gave them a taste of the exciting practical work they can expect as GCSE artists.
