9s Icy Adventures
17th July 2025
Our intrepid Year 9 explorers had the trip of a lifetime this month, jetting off to Iceland! With an eye-watering 2:30am start from school on Sunday morning, they flew straight to Reykjavik and wasted no time diving into a packed four-day adventure.
No sooner had they landed than the sightseeing began. The group hit the ground running, taking in Iceland’s stunning landscapes and jaw-dropping natural wonders. Highlights included a dip in the steamy waters of the Secret Lagoon, a walk around the colourful Kerið crater, and a thundering visit to the mighty Gullfoss waterfall.
They witnessed the explosive energy of Geysir (don’t worry—it’s meant to erupt!), explored the epic landscapes of Þingvellir National Park, and got hands-on with Iceland’s volcanic history at the Lava Centre. There were also visits to Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls, the dramatic black sands of Reynisfjara beach, and the bubbling geothermal park at Hveragerði.
But the biggest twist came right at the end of the trip…
Just as the group was wrapping up their final activities, news broke that a volcano near the area had erupted, leading to a sudden tourist evacuation! Thankfully, our students and staff had made it safely already and were on their way home, adding a very dramatic ending to an already unforgettable adventure.
Between the stunning views, powerful waterfalls, steaming hot springs, and a literal volcanic escape, this trip will go down as one for the history books. Huge credit to the students for their energy, enthusiasm, and resilience, and to the staff for keeping everything running smoothly (and safely!).
